It's NOT for You
Since 2008, I've been laboring over this game in my spare time. I am not at all sure why. There is something of an obsession about it—and it's not yet the game I set out to make. Twelve Dark Rooms (play-tested since 2010) is the simple version of The Door That Wasn't There Before. Some day both games, which use the same base-set of cards, tiles and dice, might be for sale. For now, I make them myself and give them away when the mood strikes.
So, what do play-testers think?
A quick unboxing of a 12DR cardboard game box (I also make a wooden game box). Much of the game and all of the boxes are handmade. The Skull and Hand decks are by The Gamecrafter. The dice, tokens and chips are from Great Hall Games in Austin, TX.
A quick, no-explanation run-through of some game elements: the twelve dark room tiles and door tiles (locked and unlocked), Hand cards (good), Skull cards (bad) and Status cards to remind the other players whether you're sane or insane, alive, dead or undead, or, perhaps, some awful combination. Once the next iteration of the game is complete, we'll hold another invitation-only playtest and do a much more thorough walk-through with better explanations. Maybe.
I told you that this game is NOT for you. But, obviously, this has not deterred you in the least from reading this far, and, maybe, watching a video or two. Perhaps, in your case, I am wrong. Maybe this game IS for you. Do you like weird, handcrafted games that allow you a great deal of flexibility when it comes to rules and general gameplay? Are you interested in helping to develop a twisted horror game that simultaneously encourages cooperation and backstabbing?
Okay then. Contact me and tell me why I should make you a game. If convinced, I will.
